How to Play Euchre

The Basics

Euchre is a 4-player, 2-team trick-taking card game. You partner with the simulated player across from you against two simulated opponents.

The Deck

24 cards are used: 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in all four suits.

Card Ranking (Trump Suit)

  1. Right Bower — Jack of the trump suit (highest)
  2. Left Bower — Jack of the same-color suit as trump
  3. Ace of trump
  4. King of trump
  5. Queen of trump
  6. 10 of trump
  7. 9 of trump (lowest trump)

Non-trump suits rank: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9 — but note the same-color Jack is removed from its suit when it becomes the Left Bower.

The Deal

Each player receives 5 cards. The top card of the remaining 4 (the kitty) is turned face up to propose trump.

Bidding

Round 1: Starting with the player left of the dealer, each player may order it up (making the face-up card's suit trump and the dealer picks it up) or pass.

Round 2: If all pass, each player may name any other suit as trump, or pass. The dealer must name a suit (Stick the Dealer rule).

The team that names trump is the maker and must win at least 3 of 5 tricks.

Going Alone

After naming trump, the maker can go alone — their partner sits out. Winning all 5 tricks alone scores 4 points.

Trick Play

You must follow the led suit if you can. Trump beats all non-trump. The Left Bower belongs to the trump suit for following-suit purposes.
